Crash on interstate caused by trucker pulling his tooth

Jan 30, 9:57 AM (ET)

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Alabama authorities say a tractor-trailer crashed on Interstate 20 because the driver lost control while he was pulling one of his teeth.

The Alabama Highway Patrol says the truck driver told troopers he had taken his hands off the wheel to pull a loose tooth when he wrecked near Tuscaloosa. The crash report states: “He had the tooth in his shirt pocket as proof.”

The tractor-trailer veered off I-20 into a ditch late Sunday and smashed into a tree. The crash shut down a stretch of interstate for about 11 hours until a single lane reopened Monday morning.

Authorities say the 57-year-old driver wasn’t seriously hurt. Al.com reports the Highway Patrol redacted the driver’s name from its copy of the crash report released to reporters.

So THAT’S why he asked to borrow that butter knife.

Stopped in here earlier, ate his usual, open-face roast beef sandwich. Kept complaining about his sore tooth, a molar back on the right side. Said it was a little loose, hurt like hell to eat the mashed potatoes and gravy even.

Odd request but I told him take the knife. Just be sure to stop in, say hello on his return trip, drop off the knife. Had no idea he was planning a little open-road DIY dentistry. He can keep the knife.

Still, looking forward to him stopping back by. If he wants to. Could make him one of them vanilla shakes he likes. That ought to feel good on the hole where his tooth used to be.

Oh, he’ll probably swing by. He’s in here all the time, whenever his route allows. Stops in and we give each other a hard time. Just playing, of course. He came in this time, I could tell right away something was bother him and he told me about his tooth.

I asked him why didn’t he go see his ex? She’s a dentist.

He just gave me that look, like did have rocks in my head?

Typical. Stubborn. Rather sit there in pain tonguing that sore tooth over and over than get relief. I mean I get it. Driving a truck all them years, putting her through dental school, getting her career off the launching pad.

Then no sooner does she have her own practice than she up and has an affair with one of her dental hygienists and leaves him. Be a damn cliche if they weren’t both of them women.

So I get it. Tough inside and out. Don’t know if I could take a flat knife, wedge it under my tooth and pop that little sucker out all while pulling 40 tons down the highway at 75 miles an hour. Well, evidently he can’t neither.

Still, that’s proof enough he’s good with his fingers. Always good to know.
